After the blue destroyed her home, Nicole walked for days, carrying Tempe on her hip, and arrived in Twinbrook. Ms. Francis Frankfurt was assigned as her social worker, but it didn't really work out."You can't just leave us here!"
"That's exactly what I can do. You've left me no choice. If you won't let us find you a foster home, then all I can do is give you somewhere to stay."
"But that's not fair, Ms. Frankfurt! I just want to go home!"
"You never can go home. Call me when you're ready to go to that foster home."With that, Ms. Frankfurt drove away and left them standing on the lawn.
Nicole broke into tears as soon as she was left alone. How was she going to raise a child, when she was just a child herself?
She gathered her courage, and settled in to teach Tempe the skills she'd need to become a well adjusted young girl, unlike her mother.
Nicole really did love Tempe, she wanted to take care of her, she just wasn't sure how.
She tucked her daughter into her crib, and kissed her forehead."I promise," she said softly, "we're safe here."
She promptly set the stove on fire. Though the fire department responded immediately, Nicole was pretty shaken. It cost them most of their remaining money to fix the damage in the kitchen.
It seemed to her like it was time to get a job. She got a job at the day spa, earning $99 a day, when it cost her $75 just for the babysitter.
Fortunately, she still had time to teach Tempe to talk before cleaning the house and collapsing in bed.
Though sometimes she was so busy, all she had time for was collapsing on her bed for a quick nap before school.
The babysitter was great with Tempe, always playing with her and taking care of her.
After several hard days, it was time for Temperance to grow up. Nicole used what little money they had to get her little girl a birthday cake.
Tempe grew up with her father's dark hair, but her mother's eyes. When Nicole saw how she looked, she started to cry. Seeing her mother so upset, Temperance gave her a big hug."Don't worry, Mummy. We're going to be okay."
